What are cookies?
Cookies are small units of text strings that websites visited by the user may send to the user's device (normally to the browser); they are then stored on the device and transmitted to the site again the next time the user visits it. A cookie cannot retrieve any other data from the user's hard disk, nor transmit computer viruses or acquire email addresses. Each cookie is unique to the user's web browser. Some of the functions of cookies can be delegated to other technologies. In this document, the term 'cookie' refers to both cookies, in the strictest sense of the word, and to all similar technologies.
Types of cookies
Cookies can be of first or third party. So-called “first party cookies” are characterized by the fact that they can only be created and viewed by the website operator whose page is visited, while “third party cookies” are cookies that are related to external domains.
Third party cookies are generated by an external website operator, always defined as “third party”, not managed by the website operator. Such third parties can generate first party cookies by saving their own cookies on the website operator domain.
An additional type of cookies are the so-called “Flash Cookies” (Local Shared Objects), which have been used by all versions of Adobe Flash Player to deliver certain contents, such as video clips or animations, in order to store user preferences. Flash cookie are stored on the device, but are managed through a different interface than the one provided by the used browser.
Purpose of cookies
Regarding the purpose of cookies, there are several types:
Technical cookies are those which are used with the only purpose of “carrying out the transmission of a communication on an electronic communications network, or insofar as this is strictly necessary to the provider of an information society service that has been explicitly requested by the contracting party or user to provide the said service” (cf. art. 122, par. 1, of the Italian Code).
They are not used for further purposes and are usually installed directly by the data controller or the website manager. They can be grouped in:browsing or session cookies, which allow users to navigate and use a website (e.g. to purchase items online or authenticate themselves to access certain sections); as a matter of fact, they are necessary for the proper functioning of the website;
analytics cookies, which can be equated to technical cookies insofar as they are used directly by the website manager to collect aggregate information on the number of visitors and the pattern of visits to the website; functional cookies, which allow users to navigate as a function of certain pre-determined criteria such as language or products to be purchased so as to improve the quality of service.Users´ prior consent is not necessary to install these cookies.
Profiling cookies are aimed at creating user profiles. They are used to send ads messages in line with the preferences shown by the user during navigation.Italian and European legislation requires users to be informed appropriately on their use so as to give their valid consent in order to use profiling cookies.
As for third party cookies, the site does not have direct control of individual cookies and can not control them (it can neither install them directly nor delete them). The user can still manage these cookies through the browser settings.
